This is a copy of The Numbers Racket CD-ROM, which I prepared back in 1998. I am presenting it here, unedited, for historical purposes. Obviously most if not all of the information is 'out of date' today, but think of it as a snapshot of what the Spy Numbers scene was like in the late 1990s.

Enjoy!

The Woodpecker

The Woodpecker

First heard in the 1970's, The Woodpecker quickly became the bane of every shortwave listener. The annoying sound could destroy large sections of any shortwave band. Eventually, the source of the signal was traced to the Soviet Union, and was discovered to be a form of Over The Horizon Backscatter Radar. The use of shortwave, rather than the microwave bands typically used for radar, allowed objects to be picked up at a much greater distance, typically thousands of miles.

With the fall of the Soviet Union, the Woodpecker also became extinct. However, it has recently been heard again, although not as often as in the 1970's, nor at the same signal levels.
